Vitamin B-12 is a water-soluble vitamin with a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and in the formation of blood. It is one of the eight B Vitamins. It is normally involved in the metabolism in every cell of the human body, especially affecting DNA synthesis and regulation, but also the metabolism of both fatty acids and amino acids. It cannot be made by humans, or any animal or plant, and so it must be consumed from bacterial sources in foods. Therefore, it is considered an essential vitamin.
